Understanding the Web, Understanding People
- Speaker:

- Abstract:
The World Wide Web is less than 20 years old. Nevertheless, it has
become one of the most important channels for communication in the
world. Nowadays, the Web is still gaining momentum as it is
transformed from a medium for disseminating information to a platform
for social interactions. Web users now publish blogs, collaboratively
edit Wikipedia, use social networking services such as Mixi and
Facebook, put up their personal photos on Flickr, and share their
experiences in using various consumer products. In this seminar, I
will talk about the evolution of the so-called Social Web, its impact
on daily life and the research opportunities and challenges. In
particular, I will discuss how studying the Web allow us to understand
people, study social relations, model user behaviours and reveal
collective preferences. I will also introduce the emerging
multidisciplinary field of Web Science, which aims at studying the Web
from technological, humanistic and social perspectives.
